Taking a leading role in translational medicine and life sciences
At the ITM we have strong ambitions for the future. We are already a leading centre for medical devices and diagnostics; a priority area for the government that is undergoing rapid expansion. Our aim is to continue building our influence and reach to turn the ITM into a major national and international location for translational medicine research and become a key player in the life sciences expansion in Birmingham, an area of strong diversity in terms of population.
Another area for future focus is our intention to develop a strong clinical trials support centre, integrating existing resources and creating new platforms for central readouts of study and trials outputs. With the award of Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) status by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), the ITM will now co-locate several programmes incorporated within the BRC. The clinical informatics team will also seek to develop protocols and processes to integrate clinical data in a research environment.
Our expansion plans include:
- Developing the 5th floor labs, with the University of Birmingham, Health Tech Institute
- Material Science to be housed on the 3rd floor
- Establish a device usability-testing centre
- To build a simulated hospital, which will allow us to test devices.
We will continue our focus on working collaboratively with local medtech SMEs to provide them with access to clinical academics and research, a key requirement in the West Midlands. We have also established a number of commercial links which will now go on to drive a number of projects with strong translational aims and goals.
